An Introduction to MPIA

A video series on the research topics and working groups at the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy

May 13, 2024

A series of short videos presents the research fields and work areas of the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy (MPIA) in Heidelberg. In addition to the research departments on galaxies and cosmology (GC), star and planet formation (PSF) and atmospheric physics of exoplanets (APEx), the MPIA has laboratories, a data science working group and technical departments that develop and build astronomical measuring instruments.

MPIA – A Brief Overview

This video is the first of a series highlighting the research and work being done at the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy (MPIA). This particular video provides a brief overview of the various activities, scientific and other.

MPIA – Atmospheric Physics of Exoplanets (APEx)

In this video, Laura Kreidberg, Sebastian Zieba, Maria Steinrück and Paul Molliére explain the main research areas of the Atmospheric Physics of Exoplanets (APEx) department. The APEx department uses observations from telescopes on Earth and in space, computer simulations and develops the measuring devices for the next step in exoplanet research.

MPIA – Galaxies and Cosmology (GC)

In this video, Hans-Walter Rix, Annalisa Pillepich, Knud Jahnke, Eduardo Bañados, Jörg-Uwe Pott, Sophia Stuber and Eleonora Zari explain the research of the Department of Galaxies and Cosmology (GC). This department uses observations with telescopes on Earth and in space, computer simulations and develops the measuring devices for the next step in researching the history of the Universe and the galaxies, including the Milky Way.

MPIA – Planet and Star Formation (PSF)

In this video, Thomas Henning and Jiao He explain the main areas of research in the Department of Planet and Star Formation (PSF). The PSF Department uses observations with telescopes on Earth and in space, computer simulations, and experiments in the laboratory for its research.

MPIA – Technical Departments

In this video, Heidi Korhonen, Martin Kürster, Silvia Scheithauer and Ralph Hofferbert present the technical departments of the MPIA and outline some of the current instrumentation projects, in particular for the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT).
