Energy Saving Group des MPIA

The Energy Saving Group was founded in fall 2022 to reduce the MPIA's energy requirements. The Energy Saving Group is made up of the MPIA construction team, representatives of the scientific departments, laboratories, workshops and the IT department. The group drew up a list of measures to reduce electricity and oil consumption in the short term and formulated long-term goals, which are now being planned or implemented:

  1. Overall energy concept for the campus
Examination of the campus buildings and energy consumption by external energy consultants. The aim is to take stock of the potential for energy-efficient refurbishment of the building envelopes and to optimize the energy efficiency of the building services.
  2. Renewal of the heating system
The institute's heat supply is currently still provided by a central heating system consisting of oil tanks. In order to ensure a sustainable and modern energy supply, a study is being carried out that includes a comparison of future-oriented energy supplies and takes into account potential energy savings.
  3. Renewal of the ventilation system
The institute expects to achieve major energy savings by completely renovating the entire ventilation system in the main building and switching to a new ventilation system based on heat recovery.
  4. Photovoltaics
In order to take a further step towards a sustainable campus that ensures scientific operational safety and contributes to CO2 reduction, we are installing photovoltaic systems.
  5. Lighting concept
The entire lighting system is gradually being converted to energy-saving LED lighting. Motion detectors will further reduce the period of use.
  6. Energy management
Energy efficiency and energy security will be the focus of all construction work carried out on the MPIA campus over the next few years. In order to monitor the impact of the measurements we take, we are introducing a new metering concept that accurately records electricity consumption in all buildings on campus.
